Minimum QualificationsEducation and/or Equivalent Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in a construction, electronics maintenance, or signal-related role.
  • Education may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.

Licenses Or Certifications

  • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by the Department Director or designee.
  • Valid Texas Driver License.
  • International Municipal Signal Association ( IMSA ) Certification Level 2.

Notes to Applicants

The Traffic Signals Technician Lead will work under limited supervision, in the testing and specification of electronic equipment and lead crews in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, school flashers, pedestrian hybrid beacons, and network communication.

Drug TestingTo be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.

Driving Requirement: This position requires a Valid Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by the Department Director or designee.

TravelExternal new hires must meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Pay Range

$26.26 - $31.45 per hour

6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in repair and maintenance of electrical equipment such as communications, computer and peripheral or control and instrumentation equipment.
  • Experience installing and pulling cable underground and aerial.
  • Ability to trouble shoot electronic equipment installation and maintenance of traffic signals or related/similar equipment.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather/severe weather conditions to install/repair traffic signals and related equipment.
  • Ability to work in a bucket truck at heights up to 40 feet.
  • Ability to use independent judgement, be innovative and creative, and be able to develop solutions to technical issues.
  • Skill in using computers to troubleshoot traffic signal issues.
  • Extensive experience in leading and training of traffic signal field crews.
  • Having created and/or taught traffic signal work related courses or provided on-the-job training for peers or subordinates.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.Reviews work orders, assigns work, and provides guidance and training to others. Ensures assigned work is completed in a timely manner. Analyzes, troubleshoots, installs, programs, repairs, inspects, and maintains routine and complex job assignments including but not limited to traffic signal equipment and associated electronic components. Reviews and interprets engineering plans, blueprints, profiles, work orders, and schematics to perform routine or complex installation or repair and maintenance of traffic signal equipment and associated electronic equipment. Monitors, evaluates, troubleshoots, and connects power lines and cables to traffic signals. Assigns or operates, diagnoses, repairs, calibrates, and maintains electronic testing equipment. Assigns or sets-up and operates hydraulic or aerial bucket truck or other City vehicle. Assigns or checks, cleans, and services equipment. Evaluates employee performance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of ADA requirements as it pertains to traffic signals and applicable Federal, State, and Local codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical code, American Traffic Safety Services Association ( ATSSA ) and Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices ( TMUTCD ) provisions, construction practices and procedures, safety policies and procedures, City practices, policies and procedures related to codes, and procedures related to traffic control, signals, signs, and markings.
  • Knowledge of surge suppression, radio frequency communications, power supply systems, and fiber optics networks.
  • Knowledge of computer and internet networking principles, equipment installation and IP address programming, customer services request system, networking and programming principles.
  • Knowledge of effective principles and practices of leadership.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in the oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of a laptop, monitor, or other device to program and diagnose a variety of networked devices.
  • Skill in the use of equipment such as bucket trucks, cranes, reel trucks, and other equipment, hand tools, multimeter, and other electronics testing equipment used to diagnose and prevent potential issues within electronic signal devices.
  • Ability to accurately log and report work progress, materials, man hours, etc. with or without the use of computer software.
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and repair electronic components, test and calibrate instruments to make precision and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
  • Ability to effectively explain policy to employees in a professional manner.
  • Ability to effectively manage projects and delegate responsibilities and establish and maintain effective working relationships with both City employees and the public and in a leadership role.
  • Ability to install, splice, remove, and test wiring and electronic components, interpret engineering plans, blueprints, profiles, work orders, and schematics.
  • Ability to guide, train, monitor, evaluate and provide feedback on the work of others.
  • Ability to use cell phones, two-way radios, and other communications equipment.
